RAF Challenge For Bryngwyn’s ‘High Flyers’

Sixty pupils met the RAF Outreach team who visited Bryngwyn on April 6th , to provide a leadership and motivation course for more able pupils from Years 8 and 9 .We had a marvellous day which challenged  pupils and staff  both mentally and physically with seemingly simple tasks, which turned out to require  thinking ‘outside the box’; leadership  and teamwork; persistence; self control and  clear, decisive communication.

Pupils practised communication and thinking skills through a variety of games at first. This led to teamwork in more complex problem solving scenarios such as the rescue and support of victims following a plane crash into a swamp. Whether we were escaping from interlinked ‘handcuffs’ in a pair; doing an embarrassing break dance; or working as a team to get our ‘wounded’ to safety, we were all in it together!

The RAF team were quick to establish a rapport with pupils and notice the qualities of   thinking, decision making and leadership of individuals. They also gave well timed, sensitive advice to ensure that each individual succeeded in carrying out their part in the task and successfully handled any initial nervousness. Sgt. Rob Simon praised the pupils’ persistent team effort; imaginative and flexible thinking; and communication skills.

Now the challenge is to make full use of these skills in real life!
